Each button is real shell, so grain, color and texture vary from piece to piece. Lay them out before you sew to spread the light and dark ones evenly.
On a coat or a thick knit, sew them on a thread shank: stitch over a toothpick laid across the button, pull it out, then wrap the thread a few times under the button.
