To trim close to a seam or an appliqué, hold the scissors with the curve bending up, away from the fabric. The points stay off the layer underneath, so you don't nick it.
The 3.5" pair reaches into the tightest spots; the 4.5" pair makes longer cuts. Keep both for thread and fabric only, since paper dulls the blades.
