From Our Workroom
Sew rhinestone appliqués on by hand with a fine needle, such as a size 10 sharp or a beading needle (see our pins, needles and clips). Use doubled polyester thread or clear nylon thread, stitch through the tulle, mesh or wire between the stones, never over a stone, and knot every few stitches. If one stitch breaks, the rest still hold.
Pin or baste the appliqué with the garment on a dress form or on the wearer, so it follows the curve of the body. On thin or stretchy fabric, put a scrap of tulle or interfacing behind the spot first so the fabric doesn't sag under the weight.
For a patch, cover it with a pressing cloth and press firmly with a hot iron for 30 to 45 seconds. Iron-on needs a fabric that takes a hot iron, such as cotton denim, twill or canvas. On nylon spandex and other heat-sensitive fabric, sew the patch on instead. Press around a rhinestone appliqué, never on it: heat can loosen the stones.

How are appliqués sold?
By the piece. The bodice appliqué comes as a pair, a mirrored left and right piece.
How do I attach a rhinestone appliqué?
Sew it on by hand through the tulle, mesh or wire between the stones. On shoes, bags and belts, you can glue it with an E6000-type adhesive instead.
Can I iron on the embroidered patches?
Yes. They have a heat-activated back: cover with a pressing cloth and press with a hot iron for 30 to 45 seconds. On jackets and bags that get washed often, add a few stitches around the edge.
How do I wash them?
Rhinestone appliqués: hand wash or spot clean only, and never iron directly on the stones. Embroidered patches: hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle, and don't iron directly on the patch.
